  • On September 17, 1862, Generals Robert E. Lee and George McClellan faced off near Antietam creek in Sharpsburg, Maryland, to begin the first battle of what was called The American Civil War, which was to be fought on northern turf.

  • After a trend of Union defeats, this well-planned win gave Abraham Lincoln the political seal he needed to state his Emancipation Proclamation.

  • Though McClellan failed to employ his differential advantage to defeat Lee’s military, he was able to check the Confederate leap into the north.

  • Although the outcome of the battle was unfinished, it remains the bloodiest day in American history, with more than 22,000 disasters.
